#AIPRISM25: Use case – Athenian Brewery

The AI-PRISM consortium holds the necessary expertise to strategically improve the EU Smart manufacturing value chain in four domains: collaborative environment, robot perception and recognition, robot programming and human factors. We are working to achieve the right trade-off between complementary and overlapping among the industrial partners.

In the industrial category, we count on use case partners with experience in actual market product development and industrial activities such as Athenian Brewery. Together with the other four use cases, we generate a broad range of user-centred requirements, deployment blueprints, integration plans, testing scenarios, and performance monitoring to assess preliminary designs and feed the next iterations.

The Athenian Brewery pilot site covers the sector of brewery production, in Greece. With 60 years of market presence, it is the country’s largest beer producer. Initially founded in 1963 by a team of  Greek entrepreneurs, the company is now part of the HEINEKEN Group. For the AI-PRISM project’s use case, the plant where the pilot will be conducted is in Thessaloniki.

Today, the Athenian Brewery team is sharing a video about their company. By working with tech provider WINGS, they will implement and demonstrate several use case scenarios in which there is a need for an AI-enhanced robotic solution that can adapt its operation to dynamic needs. Ultimately, we aim to transform the brewery industry towards Industry 5.0, automating complex tasks that require dynamic and fast repurposing and reconfiguration actions.

Athenian Brewery produces and distributes products in 19 countries across 5 continents. Moreover, it brews apple ciders using purely Greek raw materials. Along with its business growth, the company has invested in modernising its manufacturing process, adopting an integrated environmental policy, creating a safe and fair working environment, promoting responsible alcohol consumption, and its social impact, all while maintaining transparency and accountability.

With AI-PRISM’s solution based on the capability of learning from human demonstrations, they focus on four tasks: filtration powder preparation, sorting of return bottles from the market, stickering the bottles for export with the tax sticker, and cleaning the packaging floor from broken glass, dirt, labels. These tasks impact operators and volume production. Therefore, the time employed could be reoriented to more productive and added value, reducing stressful tasks and human presence in high-risk areas.

In this use case, robots should be able to interact with the surrounding space by sensing the environment to ensure human safety while being seamlessly connected with the other factory systems to execute coordinated and sequenced dynamically defined logistics tasks and customised orders. Thanks to the AI-PRISM ecosystem, Athenian Brewery and other future manufacturing industrial organisations working in the field of beer brewery will be able to improve workers’ safety, reduce the number of operators in heavy tasks and high-risk areas, and reduce operational expenditures and increase cost-efficiency in dynamic and custom tasks.
